Panama Canal

Well, where do we start? This has been the most amazing days ever on a cruise ship. The Panama Canal certainly is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. We started transiting it at 7 am and just left at 4pm. It is amazing to watch the electric locos which cost 1.4 million dollars each, hook up to the ship to guide us through the sets of locks.

I thought each lock would take ages to navigate but they fill up with water really quickly. Amazing to think this was all built around 1913. We can see why our ship is Panamax - the locks are 1000ft by 110ft and we barely fitted. Other ships in the lock were mainly bulk and container carriers but because so few cruise ships can fit in the locks, we were quite a spectacle - we only saw one other cruise ship which is the Celebrity Infinity which was ahead of us so we got good pictures

It was weird feeling the ship rise up to the Gatun Lake and fall back down to the Caribbean. Like nothing on earth - this is a 'must do' for everybody. We are tired from the heat and humidity plus the excitement so may post a few more pictures tomorrow.

  1. Looks good, can't believe the slope them locos are going up, must have some serious power in them. Amazing feat of engineering.
